Around 1 in 4 pupils in the UK are eligible for Free School Meals. So what happens when term finishes? During the 13 weeks of school holidays, this provision isn’t available and many children and families struggle.
Our latest research found that 64% of teachers in London expected at least one child in their class to go hungry in the summer break. That could mean up to 98,000 children in London experiencing hunger.
In addition to our core services, we have created bespoke programmes to ensure more families get the support they need during the school holidays.
With more families needing access to food during school holidays, these distribution events allow us to deliver more high-quality surplus food at this crucial time. Schools, housing associations and other community organisations put on large-scale events for their local community. Last year, we redistributed the equivalent of almost 5 million meals.
Felix Meals provide a nutritious and balanced meal option for children and families in the holidays. The meals are cooked in Felix's Kitchen, using fresh ingredients prepared and cooked on the same day, before being divided into individual portions for distribution. The meals are quick and easy for community organisations to reheat on site or can be given out and taken home by families.
