A series of stars have helped sort food that is set to be delivered to people in need this Christmas.
TV chef Clodagh McKenna brought her husband Harry Herbert and step-children Will and Chloe and was joined by chef, broadcaster and friend Mark Wogan, who brought his son, Harry, to The Felix Project depot in Acton to spend Christmas Eve morning volunteering.
The group spent the morning decanting and sorting food that will go out this afternoon to organisations who are holding last minute food support services on 24th or even some on the 25th.
The food will provide vital support to people who need it cross Acton, and the whole of London with each of Felix’s four depots open on 24th
Clodagh, who started supporting the charity earlier in the year said: “It is an inspiration to see the work of The Felix Project and all the amazing food they rescue. Food brings me such joy and keeps us all happy and healthy, but I am so saddened to know that so many people are really struggling to afford to buy the food they need. I am so happy to be here with my family and to know we are helping to feed people during these difficult times.”
Mark Wogan, who previously supported The Felix Project during Covid by donating food from his restaurant group during lockdown added: “There is such a huge amount of food waste across the industry, I have seen it again and again. I was delighted to know all those years ago my food would not be going to waste and I am now once again delighted to see how the charity has grown and is doing so much more to prevent food waste and use it to feed people.”
The weeks before Christmas are the busiest time of year for The Felix Project, with supermarkets stocking a lot of extra food for the festive season, there is more surplus available.
In the week of 8th December, Acton rescued over 108 tonnes of food, this is up around 11% compared to a normal week in September. Across all four sites, Felix rescued almost 430 tonnes of food, around 18% more than an average week in September.
One of the places that will receive the food sorted by Clodagh is West Drayton Kids Club in Hillingdon. They have been receiving food from The Felix Project during the holidays for just over a year and recently started getting a weekly delivery. They have a food bank running the afternoon of Christmas Eve, it will be the organisations 3rd delivery in the last few weeks. Manager, Clare says “It will be a huge help to the families we support, we have so many coming to us, from parents with babies, right through to parents with college kids. We help families with members on probation and plenty of refugees families. People have been asking about what time the food is coming, so I know so many will be relying on it to make sure they have food for Christmas Day. Last week we had an amazing delivery with things like broccoli, potatoes, there were strawberries, which went down so well with the kids, as did the crisps and milkshakes, we are so grateful for everything Felix provide.”
Every day The Felix Project has hundreds of volunteers helping to sort, prepare and deliver food to the organisations it supports. In 2024 13,000 people gave their time to the charity, Head of Volunteering, Debbie Coulson says: “Quite simply we would not be able to do what we do, and at the scale we do, without our incredible army of volunteers. They are the backbone of The Felix Project. Each day our four depots get people coming back again and again to help us and it was amazing to have Clodagh, Mark and their families get stuck in and get to experience the Felix volunteer family. 2026 is going to be a huge year for Felix as we merge with FareShare and look to achieve even more. It is vital we get as many volunteers through our doors as possible to help us to rescue more food and feed more people.”
