The Felix Food Factory increases the shelf-life and variety of the food that we can deliver to our community organisations - and we need your help in production!

Last year, fruit and vegetables made up 64% of the food that we redistributed. At the Felix Food Factory, you will help transform some of that fresh produce into longer-life products through dehydrating, jamming, freezing, making sauces and much more.

Crucially, the products made at the Felix Food Factory like jams, pasta sauces and dried fruits have a longer shelf-life compared to their fresh ingredients, allowing us to distribute these items throughout the year when our communities need them most.

What will I be doing?

After a full briefing on the factory and health and safety, you'll head onto the floor. Depending on the day, your roles could include:

  • Unloading and washing fresh produce.
  • Peeling, chopping, slicing fruits & vegetables.
  • Weighing ingredients ready for cooking or re-packing.
  • Loading dehydrators and blast freezers with trolleys of food.
  • Helping with jam and chutney production.
  • Labelling product packaging.
  • Loading crates of products ready for delivery.

Shift times: Monday - Friday, 08:30-13:00, 12:30-17:00

Why volunteer with The Felix Project?

The Felix Project is London's biggest food redistribution charity. We work with businesses to rescue their good quality surplus food - food that would otherwise go to waste - and deliver it free of charge to hundreds of local charities and schools in London to help children and families, the elderly, the homeless, and more.

  • Fight hunger - last year we delivered over 44 million meals to more than 1,200 charities and schools in London.
  • Stop food waste and protect the environment - by volunteering with us, not only are you helping to feed Londoners in need but you are also protecting the environment by preventing this precious food from ending up in landfill.
  • Make a huge difference to your local area AND to the whole of London.

“Absolutely amazed by this new arm for Felix, food waste efficiency at its finest. The team were brilliant, had such a great morning"

Frequently asked questions

Indicator

Do I need any previous experience?

No, everything is explained on site.

Indicator

Do I need to have volunteered at one of the warehouses first?

If you'd like to do a warehouse shift first, you are very welcome to. But if you want to get started at Felix Food Factory straight away, this isn't a requirement.

Indicator

Do I need to be physically fit?

Though less physically demanding than our depot-based roles, you should be comfortable carrying out physical work, including lifting, repetitive food preparation tasks and standing on your feet for extended periods of time.

Indicator

Will Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) be provided?

As one of the core focuses of this facility centres on extending the shelf-life of surplus produce, hygiene and food safety standards are appropriately high. To minimise the risk of accidents or contamination, you'll be asked to remove/cover any jewellery and required to wear provided PPE whilst on the 'factory floor' including overcoats, hairnets and gloves.

Indicator

Why don’t you just send the fruit and vegetables out when they’re fresh?

We do! Currently, Felix Food Factory processes a small fraction of the fruit and vegetables we receive overall. The bulk is sent out to community organisations as fresh produce.

The factory helps when we have large excesses and community organisations are already at capacity. For example - a large glut of in-season tomatoes (3-5 days shelf-life) rescued in July, could be turned into a jarred tomato pasta sauce (9-12 months shelf-life), ready to be re-distributed throughout the rest of the year alongside usual deliveries.
