Indicator

Why do we urgently need drivers?

Right now, 48 tonnes of food is wasted each week across the UK while a cost of living crisis pushes more people into food poverty.

Our amazing drivers help rescue the food surplus before it becomes waste and deliver it to charities, schools and community organisations across London for people in need.

Basic requirements to drive with Felix

Beyond being able to drive confidently, you will need to meet the following requirements:

  • Have a full driving licence with 6 points or less on the licence
  • Be 21 years old or over
  • Have been driving for a year or more
  • Be available for 3-5 hour driving shifts

Professional driving experience is a plus!

We will ask you to complete a driving assessment with us before you can go out in the van on your own.

Indicator

How long are the driving shifts?

Shifts tend to be 3-5 hours but maybe longer due to traffic or the number of stops. We have morning, afternoon & some evening shifts available, and are open from Monday-Saturday.

Indicator

Do I need a special licence or need any training before volunteering?

No, although we do ask to do a DVLA check and ask you have no more than 6 points on your licence. We will be asking you to do a driving assessment in one of our vans first. Drivers need to be 21 years or older and have been driving for a year or more. Please be aware that drivers who turn 70 are required to renew their licenses. If this applies to you, you will need to ensure your renewed license has the relevant B category to drive our vans.

Indicator

Are your vans manual or automatic?

They are manual. However, our Central London operation uses vans that are automatic and smaller.

Indicator

Will I be on my own?

It's up to you! We have a co-driver role which supports our drivers with navigating, as well as loading and unloading of vans. However, depending on volunteer numbers we cannot always guarantee you will have a co-driver, but please do discuss with the team if you have any concerns or preferences and we will accommodate where we can.

Indicator

Do I need to be physically fit to do this role?

Ideally yes as the role involves loading and unloading vans. However, we will work with you to make the role more accessible and will provide support where possible. We also have co-drivers who can help with the physical side of the role.

about the felix project

I am naturally very curious so love visiting the various charities that we drop food off at and the companies we collect food from chatting with people working at them and finding out what they do, if I am lucky I get a tour as well. I love driving a big white van … oops I mean a green Felix van!
