WHAT IT'S LIKE TO VOLUNTEER WITH FELIX

Volunteering has enabled me to obtain a good understanding of what happens to unwanted food from wholesalers and retailers in an urban environment. I would like to think that the support that I have given, big or small, has benefited someone somewhere.

Winston Gordon , Volunteer

When I saw the ad in the Evening Standard late last summer I immediately knew this was the kind of volunteering I wanted to get involved in. The wonderful food we pick up is far too precious to be thrown away, and so it makes sense to distribute to different charities. So rewarding - can’t get better than that!

Thérèse Diffey , Volunteer

As I retired recently I started helping out on the Felix Project in West London. A worthy cause that came from a sad event. I love the work and the people are fun and I enjoy spending a morning or afternoon giving something back to the community.

Sean Birch , Volunteer

I am a retired person with too much spare time on my hands and this volunteering opportunity gives me something useful to do, as well as the chance to meet new people.

Ken Goodman , Volunteer

There is so much food wasted every day when there are people all around us who are hungry. Collecting surplus food donated by supermarkets and delivering it direct to other charities, who then use this food to make meals, is such a simple but brilliant idea.

Tony Stokes , Volunteer

We have a long association with The Felix Project and it is hard to under-estimate the good work they do in helping to feed people with food that might otherwise go to waste.

Andrew Jones , Trustee , 29TH MAY 1961 CHARITY

What I didn't know was how much food surplus was generated by the food industry. It amazes me the quality of the food that The Felix Project rescues for people in need.

Tim, Felix volunteer

It’s extremely moving to see a line of people down the street waiting for your arrival. The food is quite extraordinary - stuff I hanker for when I go to the supermarket. Really exceptional fish and extraordinary cuts of meat.

Julia, Felix volunteer

Felix deliveries have made a huge difference, not just for the young people, but for everyone. We get lots of fresh stuff - fruits and veg, bread, meat, yogurt, milk, and tinned stuff. Actually, I’m trying to think what we don’t get!

Joyclen , Founder , RISE 365

There’s no reason for children to be starving or going hungry with the amount of surplus food that’s out there.

Michelle Dornelly , Children with Voices in Hackney

We would see a lot more hungry children if food from Felix stopped

Tam, Haringey Play Association

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Indicator

How old do I need to be to volunteer?

You need to be 16 years or older in order to volunteer with us. However, if you are under 18, you must be accompanied by an adult who will volunteer alongside you.

Indicator

Do I have to be physically fit?

You need to be fairly active to be a Felix volunteer. Warehouse, Green Scheme and van roles involve lifting - sometimes crates of food and boxes can weigh up to 10kg. However, we do have office roles and will work with you to find a role that suits your physical fitness.

Indicator

Do I need a driving licence?

Felix's Volunteer Drivers need a valid UK licence. Felix drivers must be over 21 years old and have been driving for over 1 year, with no more than 6 points on their licence. We also ask drivers to complete a minimum of 1 warehouse shift, 2 co-driving shifts and an assessment before setting out on the road alone. This is so our drivers feel comfortable in our vans and confident with our processes.

Indicator

Can we volunteer as a family or group?

All volunteers must be over 16+ and sign up individually. Any under 18s must be accompanied by an adult. Once you've completed your training, you may be able to book onto a shift at the same time as your friend or family member. But we have no capacity for official 'group' bookings.
